Trying to Lose Weight in an Office Full of Food

I started a "weight loss" challenge at my gym about 2 weeks ago. I've never been one to obsess about my weight. I've been an athlete all my life, grew up exercising 4-5 times a week, and simply eating whatever I wanted. But as I get older it's not so easy to simply "eat what I assume is healthy" and run it off. So for no one but myself I have decided to get back on track and lose 20-30 lbs--and become "High School Skinny" as our wonderful Q100 Healthy Trim advertises always say.

But damn! When you work at a radio station having clients bring in food, having birthdays celebrations galore, and random lunch dates with friends--it's hard to maintain your will power. Just say NO to Cake! Example: just the other morning the Rock Promotions staff had Dunkin Donuts. Our wonderful Mike Keye, who is one of the promotional directors of Rock 100.5, decided that he was going to be a sweetheart and walk around the sales cubicles offering Dunkin Donuts doughnut holes to each person.

Do you know how scrumptcious doughnut holes are? Especially the chocolate glazed ones? Their warm and soggy and just melt in your mouth. Don't worry I resisted. And I have resisted sweets for the past 2 weeks...and counting--but working here sure isn't making it any easier.

And we wonder why America is the most obese nation. Because we love us some food, and I wouldn't have it any other way. But for now I'm sticking to lean meats, vegetables, and working out 6 days a week.

Vera Wang will be on Dancing with The Stars!

E! News reports designer Vera Wang has signed on to compete on next season's "Dancing With the Stars". Wang will be 60 by the time she competes. As a young girl, she trained as a professional figure skater. She later designed costumes for Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan. ABC just announced today that season nine will premiere with a three-night, five-hour extravaganza on Sept. 21.

Emily Giffin is a great "chick flick" author. I myself have read one of her books and thought it was definitely worthy of my time. Now you wouldn't find my boyfriend reading any of her books of course, because they are more suited for the female persuasion. I read her book Something Borrowed last summer about a woman who gets her fiance stolen from her by her best friend. Seriously? Yeah, seriously. It was kind of tortuous having to be the third party in this scandalous "love-affair," but intriguing none-the-less.

Jessica Dauler, of Jessica Shops and Jeff Dauler's wife from Q100's The Bert Show, is having a party where you can meet Emily Giffin this Thursday at the W in Buckhead. (See Above).

I'm torn between attending my 30 min training session at the gym, or going to get my book signed while enjoying the Thursday night summer air in midtown. My butt says I should go to the gym, but my tummy says I should enjoy a yummy alcoholic beverage of choice.

Yeah, it'll be a last minute decision--but you should go!

Cumulus Media, owners of Q100, Rock 100.5, and 99x, have brought back 99x to local radio. It's AWESOME! I'm myself am an alternative rock girl at heart, so I'm in love.

99X is famous for breaking new music, live acoustic events, and Unplugged in the Park at Park Tavern. And all of it is BACK! I'm personally excited about the Live X's that are going to be occurring at the office. One of my personal favorite bands is "Taking Back Sunday," and they will be in the studio June 17th around lunch time! If you are invited to the studio (JUST LISTEN TO 99X AND WIN TIX TO COME IN) you'll be able to hear them play some acoustic jams, sign some autographs, and ask questions. Can it get any better than that? Nope, didn't think so. Of course, Miley Cyrus fans would disagree. :)

Bing.com: Microsoft's New Search Engine

Microsoft is spending over 100 million dollars on advertisment for thier new search engine "Bing," and Q100 is going to help! Later in June and in July you are going to hear all about Bing.com on Q100! Listen for the latest about it during the mornings with The Bert Show, and afternoons with Johnny O.

" Bing.com may only be a few days old, but it looks like people already approve of it. It is by no means leading the way (Live Search never did), but we are already getting a few readers from it.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that we are the top ranked result for the word “geek” (but that doesn’t account for as much traffic as you’d think.)

Looking through the numbers we see that the vast majority of Bing users are based in the US (about 75%) followed by Canada, the UK, and Australia. And–no surprise–84% of them are using InternetExplorer and 96% of them are on Windows.

While these numbers are interesting, the sample size isn’t huge and they might very well reflect the people that are searching for terms that land them at Geek.com as much as they reflect Bing’s users.

It’s still to early to deliver a verdict, but it looks like Bing is off to an OK start. There is surely a jump in searches this week thanks to all the publicity and maybe some people might stick around, but it looks like traffic still largely consists of people who are using it because it is their default tool.

Tan lean bodies, beach sand, and summer fun! That's what the AVP Crocs Tour is all about! AVP Crocs tour is coming to Atlanta the weekend of May 29th-31st, and it will be hot! I'm excited because after watching some of these super stars like Kerrie Walsh, Misty May, Philip Dalhausser, and Todd Rogers--it made me want to watch them live in action. I grew up a soccer and volleyball athlete, so the rush and intensity is great to watch.

If you're not into volleyball--I know you are into great looking people--and that's definitely what you will find.

Rock 100.5 becoming more "female friendly"

Q100's Sister Station Rock 100.5 is tweeking it's playlist a bit. No, it's not a format change, it's just adding in a bit of alternative rock, and mort current rock to be a "mass appeal" rock station. Personally, I love the idea. They will be playing more bands like Counting Crows, U2, Coldplay, Oasis, and less hard rock like ACDC, head bangers. They are phrasing it as "quality rock." I myself have always been an alternative rock fan, therefore this minor tweek will suite me just fine. Rock stations have always had the stigma of being a "male dominated stations." There is a bit of truth to this stimga, but here at Cumulus we are trying to please all, even the females.

Have no fear Q100 will still be set on my #1 button on my car radio, but Rock 100.5 is a close second!

Carpet Catastrophe!

Unfortunately unlike our inventory in the month of March, our new carpet is leaving less to be desired. Q100's inventory was sold out for the month of March, and the sales staff is recieving high praises, but the feeling is not mutual for the carpet. I walked in this morning to the office to hear nothing but grumbles.

Obviously, non of management wants to take credit for such a 1980's psychedelic fashion statement, but someone has to be to blame! I'm sure in this economy who ever did pick it won't fess up, in fear of being fired for poor fashion sense. They obviously haven't been watching enough HGTV.

To be honest, the picture doesn't capture the hideousness that I was hoping to display. Personally I would of kept the old carpet, but rumor has it that it was a safety hazard. I know I have tripped on it twice before, but then again it could of been my graceful jaunt in high heels.

Non-the-less new is new, and in this economy beggers can't be choices.

Web surfers ranked by format. Of the top 20 most-listened to formats, those who favor Modern Rock and Urban-formatted stations spend the most amount of time online. Recent Media Audit data shows 44% of Modern Rock listeners are considered “heavy” internet users. They spend more than seven hours a week online. Urban listeners (43%) and CHR (42%) are close behind. Literally fractions of a percentage point lower are Dance CHR and Hot AC. Public Radio and Sports partisans are among the most frequent E-commerce purchasers. According to the Media Audit report, exactly one of three Public Radio listeners bought items from the internet at least 12 times in a typical year; 31.5% of Sports listeners made the same number of purchases. It isn’t surprising that, in a typical 30-day period, well over one-half (57%) of Sports listeners log onto the internet from work, compared to 39% among all U.S. adults.

"The white population is aging and will decline as a percentage of the population. Projections are that by 2023 there will be no racial majority among those 18-years-old and younger and that by 2042 there will be no racial majority in the country. The Latino population is increasing significantly (much faster than African-Americans), with a large percentage of young. At 15 percent, Latinos today are the largest minority group. By 2040, one of every four Americans likely will have Latino roots on their family tree.

Estimates vary, but over time more workers will leave the workforce than there will be new workers to replace them. That means fewer workers paying fewer taxes to support everything from public services to Social Security. “We need those young Hispanic workers down the road to take care of an older white population,” Crouch says."

Disadvantages of the Yellow Pages

Limited Exposure: Less than half of U.S. adults (46%) refer to the printed Yellow Pages directory during an average week. The other 54% will not see your ad.(Yellow Pages Association, 2008)

Minimal Consumer Awareness: Since the Yellow Pages typically are consulted after the decision to buy has been made, top-of-mind awareness must be built in other ways. As products continue to proliferate and the retail business becomes saturated, you must create demand for your products before the buying decision has been made.

Ad Clutter: Your ad is lumped in with all the others for the same product, where shoppers can compare.

Inconvenient: Phone books tend to be bulky, hard to store, and not readily available to consumers outside of the home or office. Their availability is limited to the locations where most purchases are made. How many pay phones have you seen that have a complete book? (Indeed, with the ever-increasing use of mobile phones, how many people even us phone booths anymore?)

Inflexible: Most directories are published once a year, and advertising must be purchased well in advance of the publication date. You can’t make corrections or changes resulting from dynamic business conditions or opportunities.

Too Many Books: In many communities, there are several different directories all competing for listings. Who reads them all?

Encroaching Competition from the Internet : Yellow Pages-like services on the Web are appearing more often. They can offer a more logical organization of data, and the capability to update information more often.

American Media Services Survey Shows Radio Listenership Remains
Consistently Strong and Internet Radio Gaining in Popularity

-- 64% of American adults listen to the Radio daily
-- 80% usually turn on the Radio when they get in their car
-- 73% are listening the same or more than they did five years ago
-- 39% of Internet Radio listeners did so in the past week, up from 23% six months ago
-- 48% expect to listen to Radio over the internet in the future, up from 38% six months ago

Although there are some naysayers who still say that Radio is losing its value, listening to the
Radio continues to be part of Americans' daily life, according to results of a nationwide telephone
survey that American Media Services released today.

The latest AMS Radio Index shows that 64 percent of American adults listen to the Radio at least once a day. Four out of five (80 percent)
say they usually turn on the Radio when they get into their car, and nearly three-quarters (73
percent) said they are listening to the Radio as much or more than they did five years ago. Each
of these findings is remarkably consistent with the past three AMS polls over the past two years.
And among those who have listened to Internet Radio or continuous music on the Internet,
nearly four out of 10 (39 percent) said they listened in the past week, compared with less than a
quarter (23 percent) who said that six months ago. While relatively few (20 percent) were
familiar with Chrysler's recent announcement that it can install Internet connections in its 2008
and 2009 vehicles, more than one out of three (37 percent) said they are interested in having an
Internet connection in their current vehicle or their next one.

"These are significant findings that once again demonstrate how much Americans rely on the
Radio for music and entertainment," said Edward F. Seeger, AMS chairman. "The survey also
makes clear that Internet Radio and continuous music over the Internet are becoming
increasingly important to American audiences."

Some specifics of the latest American Media Services Radio Index include the following.
-- Daily listenership was 64 percent in the latest survey, compared with 61 percent this past
March, 63 percent in September 2007 and 64 percent in April 2007. The slight variations are
within the survey's margin of error of 3 percentage points.

-- Four out of five (80 percent) said they usually turn on the Radio when they get into their car,
compared with 73 percent last March, 74 percent a year ago and 75 percent in April 2007.

-- Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) said they listen to the Radio as much or more than they
did five years ago, compared with 72 percent last March, 74 percent a year ago and 69 percent
in April 2007.

-- Radio remains the Number One way that Americans learn about new music. Nearly half (49
percent) cited the Radio, compared with 27 percent from friends, relatives or other word of
mouth. Lesser sources included TV and reviews in newspapers or magazines.

-- Nearly half of Americans (47 percent) said it doesn't matter to them whether their Radio
program is originating locally. Only 28 percent said it mattered a lot.

-- About half (51 percent) say they usually stay tuned to their favorite music station when
commercial breaks come on, a statistically insignificant change from 53 percent six months ago.
Only 7 percent said they turn off the Radio, and 38 percent said they change to another station.

RETAIL--> "Execs Exhale: Initial Spending Stronger Than Expected"

While it's a little too early for full-fledged yodeling, early surveys of retailers show that shoppers were out in force last weekend, and spending more than many had predicted as they trolled for holiday bargains.

The National Retail Federation's 2008 Black Friday Weekend survey--which measured Friday and Saturday, and used estimates for Sunday--indicates that some 172 million Americans shopped in stores and Web sites over Thanksgiving weekend, an increase from last year's 147 million. NRF estimates they spent an average of $372.57--a 7.2% jump from the $347.55 spent last year, with total spending projected at $41 billion.

"Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unparalleled bargains on this season's hottest items, helped drive shopping all weekend," the trade group says in its release. "Holiday sales are not expected to continue at this brisk pace, but it is encouraging that Americans seem excited to go shopping again."

By day measurement, the NRF says one big change is the sharp increase in the number of people who didn't wait for Black Friday and took to the mall even before their turkey and pumpkin pie was fully digested. Some 16.2 million people shopped on Thursday, an increase of 48% from last year. Black Friday lived up to its reputation, with 73.6 million people shopping. Just over 23% were at stores by 5 a.m., while 57.6% punched in by 9. About 56.9 million people shopped on Saturday, an increase from 48.3 million last year. NRF estimated that another 26.2 million people planned to shop on Sunday.

By channel, the trade group says 54.7% visited discount stores, 43% shopped at traditional department stores, and about a third checked out specialty stores, including clothing and electronics stores, (36.0%) and shopped online (34.0%). And by category, spending was typical, except for a 10% decline in the use of gift cards.
ShopperTrak RCT, a Chicago-based company that tracks retail results, also saw encouraging levels of spending--reporting a 3% gain from last year, with Black Friday sales totaling $10.6 billion. Spending was strongest in the South, at 3.4%--followed by the Midwest, up 3%, the West, up 2.7%, and the Northeast, up 2.6%.

Forecasters, however, are reluctant to read too much into these early results. For one thing, ShopperTrak executives point out, a later-than-usual Thanksgiving means that consumers have just 27 days to shop this year, compared to 32 last year. And, perhaps because of intense consumer anxiety about the economy, many in this weekend's crowd were actually closer to finishing their shopping, not starting.

The NRF, still predicting a total increase of just 2% for the season, says Americans have completed slightly more shopping than they had one year ago (39.3% vs. 36.4%), "indicating that traffic and sales over the next several weeks will moderate."

The Recession: A Time for Women Business Owners to Shine

W ith consumer wallets tightening and many businesses looking to scale back as they readjust their earning projections for this year and the first half of next year in the wake of this global economic crisis, businesses are looking to reposition themselves as ‘just what the budget-conscious buyer needs.’

It has been interesting to watch businesses jump on the discount bandwagon, but slashing prices is not the only way of handling the crisis. Some companies like Walmart found themselves in the right place at the right time, others like Porsche were smart enough to hedge their bets, while many more have had to be a bit more creative in order to paint themselves recessionista red. The latest to hitch their ride to this train include high-end luxury retailers like Chanel, Versace and Chloé.

So why does the current economy open up an opportunity for women business owners? It’s because as women we are the savviest shoppers of all. Women make over 80 percent of all consumer purchases. Since we do the buying, we know how and why people buy (and why they don’t). We are well equipped to pry open their purse strings and get them from pining to purchasing. Tapping into this reservoir of knowledge gives us a leg up in terms of how to sell and keep selling during a time when people are watching every last penny. Here are three reasons women business owners are equipped to flourish in this economy.

Empathy – Females actually have a larger, deeper limbic system than males do, part of the physiology behind why women tend to have higher levels of empathy then men. When you are feeling down you want to talk to someone who can empathize, someone who can feel your pain. That is why during times of distress; women are naturally better positioned to be the ones people turn to for help, support and solutions. When worry and unrest abound, people look for pick-me-ups and safety nets to weather the psychological storm. Lower-end luxuries can be positioned as affordable indulgences in a time when the big ticket items are getting put back on the shelf. A warranty or some form of safe guarding may pack an added value punch in a time when nothing seems certain.

Emotion – Women are more in touch with their feelings and more likely to sense the feelings of others consequently; they have better interpersonal skills, which translates in the business world to sales skills. While buyers like to fancy themselves logical, buying decisions get made on an emotional level first and then get justified with left brain logic. While a buyer’s financial situation may have changed, the way they make decisions has not. Your sales pitch still needs to appeal to their emotions, even though they may be having different emotions these days. For a corporate buyer who is worried about losing their job as layoffs loom, this may be an appeal to their desire to stand apart as a clutch player or someone the company can’t afford to let go. For a consumer who feels like they should be scaling back on the extravagant, this might mean appealing to their desire to be seen as practical. Personally, I felt quite practical when I found myself purchasing ‘buy one, get one free’ Doritos at Publix the other day, even though, I really didn’t need one bag, much less two. Think about how you can use these emotional responses to your advantage as a business.

Perspective – Women see things in a much bigger context and consider the larger implications of their actions when making a business decision whereas men tend to focus on the immediate. This balanced, long-term perspective is seen in stock portfolio decisions, as it is women who tend to diversify and men who tend to favor fads and attempt to hit it big by taking big risks. Similarly, women by nature see the value of putting their eggs in multiple baskets, which means rather than betting the farm on any one strategy or idea, we’ve usually got multiple irons in the fire at any one time. This diversified approach creates more insulation from any one calamity and also gives our business a broad foundation that is harder to rock even in a big storm.

It is impossible to ignore the macroeconomic situation that is upon us, and it certainly should be factored into short-term (six to 12 months) planning and decision-making. However, despite the dire nature of current conditions, remember that they are just that, temporary conditions of today, which are guaranteed to change in some future tomorrow. So if and when you choose to paint your company recessionista red, make sure you use water-based paint.

I was rooting for Brooke the whole time I mean who wouldn't be impressed with a strong woman who has four kids and still looks that fabulous. Deep down inside though I am an NSYNC fan so I was hoping Lance would claim the runner-up spot. I literally yelled at the top of my lungs in shock when he was the first of the three to get eliminated. Total shock. As for my dog Tater Tot, he was in shock as to why I was screaming and disturbing his "chewing his bone time."

But I will give it up for Mr. Sapp. For a man as big as him, I was dazzled by his agility and feather feet on the dance floor.
